As Abortion Bill Nears House Vote, White House Threatens Veto

Posted: May 3, 2011

President Obama would veto H.R. 3 -- the bill that became infamous earlier this year for its original language about "forcible rape" -- if it were ever to make it to his desk.
The finalized version of H.R. 3, which proponents say is aimed at making existing government restrictions on funding abortion permanent, is scheduled for a House vote on Monday. Critics of the bill, including the White House, have said that it would make it tougherfor women to seek abortion coverage from private insurers, effectively expanding government restrictions on abortion funding beyond the accepted practice found in the Hyde Amendment (which needs to be renewed by Congress every year.)
It's not likely that Obama will see the bill reach his desk, thanks to numbers in the Senate that better favor the pro-choice community, which is adamantly opposed to H.R. 3. The bill was authored by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) -- who cut out the "forcible rape" language after criticismfrom pro-choicers and Democrats -- has many supporters in the Republican-controlled House, and is likely to do well there on Wednesday.

“H.R. 3 will prevent the use of federal taxpayer funds to pay for elective abortions,” said an email alert from the American Family Association. “If H.R. 3 does not become law, we as taxpayers may soon be paying for 675,000 abortions a year.”

“If this bill becomes law, funding will be prohibited for elective abortion coverage through any program in the Department of Health and Human Services,” said the AFA alert. “It will prevent funding for abortion as a method of family planning overseas.
It will prohibit funding for elective abortion coverage for federal employees. It will prevent taxpayer funded abortions in Washington, D.C. It will protect conscience-driven health care providers from being forced by the government to participate in abortions.”

Critical pro-life bill on the docket

Posted: May 3, 2011
The U.S. House is set to take action this week on a bill that would ban federal tax funds for abortion -- permanently.

The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act (H.R. 3) is sponsored by Congressman Chris Smith (R-New Jersey); it has more than 225 co-sponsors. Voting on the measure is expected to commence this week.
